A 450-yo oak is felled without permission by a Toby Carvery (don’t eat there), who falsely claimed it was "dead".
A tree alive when The Gunpowder Plot was hatched, which supports a web of 2000+ species, is in pieces.
Legal protection for heritage trees needed.

Toby Carvery admits felling ancient Whitewebbs oak tree
The owner of the pub chain falsely claimed the tree was dead as justification for the felling which has shocked local people and prompted outrage from conservationists across the country

A 1939 advert for Huntley & Palmer's biscuits from Reading & the "Empire's largest biscuit factory". This long established company had helped revolutionise biscuit production & marketing & were already part of the larger Associated Biscuits group. #vintage #biscuits

↘️ flic.kr/p/2qWujEg
Seen in a guide produced with the backing of the County Borough of Reading by the local Chamber of Commerce and issued in July 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. It contains details of residential amenities and services in the then growing town as well as a description of the local industries; these included several large employers such as Huntley & Palmers biscuits, Simonds Brewery and Sutton's Seeds as seen here.

Huntley & Palmers, founded in the town by Jospeh Huntley in 1822, became one of the earliest global food brands largely thanks to George Palmer who joined the company in 1841, and the use of both production and packaging technology; the company became famous for its decorated metal biscuit tins, as seen here, that both protected the product and helped sell the brand. In 1921 they merged with London based rivals Peek Freans to form Associated Biscuits and this, eventually, became part of Nabisco who closed the Reading works in 1976. The brand name was sold on and has recently been re-established, although production is not in the town.

The advert set on a table shows a display of biscuits alongside three of the large loose biscuit tins as sold by weight in grocers. They are Cheese Assorted, Standard Kinds (an assortment of plain biscuits) amd Ginger Nuts with the advertising figure of "John Ginger").

Good morning to @tommckinney.bsky.social and whatever birds just twittered away on Radio 3 Breakfast. Looks like we’re keeping Bach before 7 and adding birdsong. Maybe Tom can combine the two? Birds singing Bach before 7?

Very sad to lose you from the early morning, Petroc. You’ve been a wonderful voice accompanying us through so many historic events. Best wishes for the new adventure!

That’s very tough. Have you looked at the Civil Service? They’re the people who often want analysis and reflective writing skills. You need to follow their application process carefully to demonstrate the match of your skills with the job spec, and practice the interview format.

We had a rule instituted in the HE institution that I used to work in, which was that emails to colleagues containing brief questions were strongly discouraged - instead, we were asked to get up from our desks, walk down the corridor, and ask face to face.

Very sad news. We chatted from time to time after an early morning church service where we were both regulars - Clive told me that he looked forward to discussing my PhD with me as it progressed. I’m sad not to have the opportunity to hear what he was going to share with me.

So far my mind has been blown the revelation that bookshelves actually got invented at a certain date. I think I imagined bookshelves as being intrinsic to human culture, or at the very least being first designed for the Tower of Babel.

Had a nightmare that I was trying to retake my final undergraduate exam.* As I wrote, I knew that I would have made things easier for myself if I hadn’t opted to write it while balancing on a tree branch writing into the pale spaces of an old photograph…

When you’re reading a scholarly work and wondering if the author was playing the game of “how many obscure and unrelated words can I insert into my argument?”

“Melismatic”? Really??
