This book brings together a range of academic and practice perspectives to analyse the ideas, institutions and practices of contemporary parole. At a time when many parole systems are strained, this collection aims to encourage systematic reflection on parole’s rationalities, institutions, and practices and to pose ambitious “what if” questions about the possible futures of parole and prison release.

Reminds me of a half-joking quote from a research interview I conducted in 2017: The HO/MoJ split looking much more "continental": "You talk to any Europeans, and it is always the Interior Ministry are a bunch of semi fascists and the Justice Ministry tend to be peopled by more liberal types."

Anyone have a view on this? Maybe @samfr.bsky.social 🙏

Sense check query for anyone Education-oriented: For my (criminal justice) research, various policy makers have pointed to Education as an area that has seen a lot of bureaucracy stripped out, real improvements in that regard over the past (5? 10? 15?) years. C'est vrai?

It’s been a real pleasure to work with Andrew, Phil and Paula from the @prisonradiouk.bsky.social and can really recommend not just the three episodes we’ve been part of, but their much wider collection of excellent ‘The Secret Life of Prisons’ podcasts 👍🏻

A nice little discussion of our @probationres.bsky.social project here. And I would hope that some other researchers might find the discussion about engaging with policy makers helpful. Always fun to chat with @matthew-millings.bsky.social and the good folk at @instituteforgovernment.org.uk

"The only sustainable way out of the criminal justice crisis involves determined rebuilding of the social fabric (non-CJS community based support services, etc), and a dramatic unwinding of sentence inflation". Discuss

Combine this with the pressures behind the Sentencing Review, the crises facing prisons and probation - and the cross pressures from the Home Office - and you've got one "interesting" time for the incoming Permanent Secretary

Leveson will send his "monster" report to Shabana Mahmood, justice secretary, in next week. It'll be published in early July.

It follows over 200 submissions & 200 meetings.

He says courts are “in crisis” with some trials listed to 2029. Without action there’s “real risk” system will collapse.
