HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS: 8/10. If you’re a fan of Buster Keaton and/or Roadrunner cartoons, this is a must see. The year’s most creative and insanely inventive film.

ANORA: 8.5/10. First act is a bit slow and drawn out but everything from the marriage onwards is solid gold. Genuinely laugh out loud hilarious until it’s brutally sad. Sean Baker’s Uncut Gems?

RED ROOMS: 7.5/10. Flew under the radar for most but this ice cold, chilling thriller really stuck with me. Been ages since I’ve seen a main character so inscrutable and hard to read.

HERETIC: 7.5/10. I am on record as saying Hugh Grant is one of our greatest living film stars, and this gives him a wonderful leading role to chew on. The ending is disappointing but the journey to get there is very fun.

KNEECAP: 7/10. Would have been my favourite film of the year if I was still in college. Musical sequences and angry politics much better than the plotting. Can’t believe none of these guys are trained actors.

THE BEAST: 7/10. Lots of interesting ideas that left me a bit cold by the end. Great performances and especially loved the bleak vision of the future, but the ending didn’t hit me like it was meant to.

THE SUBSTANCE: 8/10. As subtle as a sledgehammer but sometimes using a sledgehammer is really fun! Knew it was going to be gross but nobody told me how funny this is. Spent the big finale howling with laughter.
