The Lumbee Tribe has been in North Carolina since long before we became a state. The Lumbee were officially recognized by the State of North Carolina in 1885 and have fought for their fair share from the federal government for more than a century.

I am overjoyed to see the Lumbee Tribe receive the federal tribal recognition that they have long deserved.
This bipartisan effort has taken years, but it pales in comparison to the over a century the Lumbee have been seeking reprieve.

On Dec. 18, President Donald Trump officially made the Lumbee tribe “number 575” when he signed the most recent national defense budget into law. The legislation which granted the Lumbee tribe full recognition was included in the bill as an unrelated measure.
