RAGTIME: The best for last. I’d seen it on stage before, but this production was deeply affecting (I cried on multiple occasions). It really is a masterpiece of musical theater, amplified by this direction and ensemble. Caissie Levy & Brandon Uranowitz were standouts, but give Joshua Henry the Tony!

CHESS: I’ve wanted to see a stage production of this show for so long! Every song is a banger. Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit and Nic Christopher are giving a singing masterclass at the Imperial. The new book was clever but maybe tried too hard, causing a slight emotional disconnect. Overall I loved it!

OEDIPUS: I must have missed this Greek hero in English class, so I went in completely blind. WOWZA. I was admittedly tired from a long travel day and wasn’t totally locked in … until the end. 😱 A countdown clock was a VERY effective way to build suspense. Lesley Manville and Mark Strong were superb!

The devaluation of skill, experience, and expertise is a crisis across cultural journalism right now--it's being felt profoundly in theater. It's great that anyone can post a review, but that does not, even in the smallest way, replace what's being thrown away.

And with all due respect to those who find it useful, TikTok is not a replacement for what is being lost.

As someone who grew up watching Letterman, I’m sad that The Late Show is coming to an end. I’m grateful I had the chance to step inside the Ed Sullivan Theater in March 2020 (right before lockdown … what a weird time to be in NYC) to see a live taping of the show and be a tiny part of history.
