"billions and billions" - Don really needs to cut back on the screen time. Add "excelerated" to your trigger word list ("Excelerated is a global consultancy specializing in source-to-pay and supply chain transformation, ....")

The insurance and lending industries could be a secret weapon in fighting global warming - when they refuse to insure or lend because of the climate risk (e.g. defaults, stranded assets) involved they send a strong economic signal that is hard to ignore.

Or the more sarcastic: So, where's that global warming when you really need it?

I may be able to understand their perspective (fear, hate, greed, cowardice, etc) but I can't agree with it. If we then agree to disagree we remain deadlocked until the future breaks the deadlock for us.

After the listen box there needs to be something to help deal with statements like climate change is a hoax, its my right to own an assault weapon no matter what, qanon is right, immigrants are bad, etc, etc.

In response to being called pessimistic I once told my boss I was actually an optimist with a very strong respect for risk.

In my world the Jays actually won: "The Los Angeles Dodgers paid a record-setting $103 million luxury tax fine for the 2024 season, due to their massive payroll exceeding MLB’s competitive balance threshold. - The Dodgers’ payroll exceeded $353 million, well above the threshold of $237 million"

"The biggest problems are poverty and disease" - made worse by climate change. It reminds me of that guy pushing the rock uphill just to have it roll back down again.

"which I fully offset with legitimate carbon credits" - isn't that just virtue signaling by a rich guy?

One simple phrase explains a lot: "the comfort of denial". When confronted with the idea of climate change there are just a few common reactions people use to make themselves feel better:
1) Ignore via "deliberate ignorance"
2) Denial
3) Do something about it

Those industries (among many others), while they do lie and deceive, are not the root of the problem. We all willingly buy their products. While a majority of people worldwide want action on climate change, they want somebody else to do it. We are the problem and we are the solution.

Lenders and insurance companies can be a strong counterbalancing force against the fossil companies. Where the fossils know they have no future (and they do but don't care), lenders and insurers know they can have a future if they don't do stupid stuff like lending or insuring in the riskiest areas

I wonder if this is a deliberate and honest attempt to influence (or whatever) OR is this subversive sarcasm from a few DOE holdouts?

I think that both doomerism and denial (enabled by willful ignorance) serve to hide a persons underlying greed and cowardice.

They may need a compelling reason to get them over the hump, like:
- economic (solar, EVs)
- religious
- their children, grandchildren (including the ones you don't yet have)
- other peoples children, grandchildren
