To get better, you have to struggle.

The way your body and mind learn, adapt, and grow is to be slightly embarrassed. That frustration is the signal that our brain/body needs to adjust.

If you want to learn and adapt, embrace the struggle.

We get confidence wrong.

Real confidence lies in understanding who you are & what you are capable of

It lies in being vulnerable, not delusional

Confidence is doing hard things, sometimes failing, but seeing where you lie & then going back to the work

Coaching is not about prescribing and dictating.

It's about creating situations where the athlete is challenged to figure it out. You nudge them along, but if you always give them the answer, you aren't actually teaching. And they aren't learning.

Do Real Things

Our brain is predictive. It adjusts to its environment. If you feed it social media, news, and entertainment all day every day it starts to use that information to predict how to respond to the world.

Doing real things in the real world is your reset.

Okay, but Guts and Double Dare could be even better.

I still want to charge up the aggro crag and have Mo approve of me, bad back and all. Millenial moms everywhere just want that slime, while swimming around in a giant glass bowl of spaghetti.

When it comes to recovery, there's a lot of junk that doesn't work. We reach for a super supplement, instead of what actually works:

1. Sleep ~8 hours
2. Hydrate adequately
3. Socialize with friends
4. Have a way to decompress
5. Eat enough real food
6. Slow/easy exercise

Consistency compounds. Small steps repeated over time lead to big gains. Don't aim to be consistently great. Aim to be great at being consistent.

Chasing outcomes is often a recipe for disappointment.

When you focus on the process, you can find success even if the outcome isn't what you expected.

Do the small things each day & you'll develop better habits that will help you reach your goal in the long run.

Instead of looking at the old-school football coaches of the world:

Look to John Wooden, Steve Kerr, Pete Carroll, and so on.

Who are crazy competitive, but at their core try to help people become better human beings.

Athletes who scored higher on intrinsic motivation were much more likely to compete internationally 2.5 years later. Cultivate an inner drive if you care about long term success, and happiness.

Prioritize effective communication over showcasing knowledge.

Acknowledge mistakes instead of trying to hide them.

Covering up mistakes only creates barriers and prevents meaningful conversations from taking place.

Peak performers often stumble when they think they’re “too good” for the basics. Even Olympians fall into this trap. Mastery starts with fundamentals, not hacks. Struggling with performance? Here’s a 3-part reset: 1. Know Yourself, 2. Build Your Base, 3. Connect Deep. Let’s break it down.

Confidence comes from being good, not great.

Anyone can have the stars align & have a great day. But the confidence from that is fleeting. Confidence comes from consistency. Show up and make your normal pretty darn good.

Focus on raising the floor, not just the ceiling.

Over optimizing is NOT optimal.

Some people get so into measuring, tracking, and optimizing everything that every meal, shower, walk—and even sleep—becomes work.

No wonder y’all are exhausted.

Focus on sustainability.

Good enough over and over again is how you become great.
