The January Bird

A howl keeps pace—
the wolf-month
unhinges its jaw—
salt cracks my lips.

I want to dissolve
in the seam
between land and winter sky—
sandbags stitch
my ankles.

My face smudges in sand.
The world spins—
I will the surf flat.

This beach aches me.
I’m too old to play alone.

The January bird waits—
a concertina of bones—
forgetting how to leave.

Can you see me
again
before I fold
back into the blue?

I fear the next wave
will name me.

After listening,
the work sounds
slightly detuned —

fridge,
traffic,
breath.

Poem/collage inspired by listening to Joanne Robertson’s Blurrr

The Cartography of Quiet

Compositions circle   a loop of strings, a loop of memory.  Then they evaporate
into echo:

the after-image of a city dissolving in low light.

These are coordinates more than songs – years and cities like faint handwriting on the backs of photographs.

Melody moves in lamplight – guitar string, then drone.
Tape hiss becomes air.

Paris: rain on metro iron. Lisboa: salt and light on blue tiles.

Cities recur as if sound could record
weather better than words could.

After listening, the world sounds
slightly detuned—
 fridge,
traffic,
breath.

Terminus can be both boundary
and god.
The divine, then, lives at the edge of leaving.
