seems to me like the sensory mismatches would either be oddly satisfying or deeply disturbing. possibly both! i admire your commitment to trying them out but i fear i will not make it that far

ESPECIALLY right as the CBA is about to expire and we *know* that owners are pushing for a salary cap under the guise of "competitive balance"
December 3, 2025 at 4:50 PM
The author is right about one thing: "The contrast between MLB and the NFL and NBA is instructive." The NFL and NBA have fallen prey to salary caps that suppress wages in service of a fantasy of parity. MLB, thanks to a strong players' union that sees caps for what they are, has not.

MLB *does* have revenue sharing as a redistributive mechanism, by the way, and it's what enables cheapskate teams like the Reds to continue turning a profit despite ownership's refusal to pay for a team worth watching. Don't let them cry poor just because they'd rather pocket revshare dollars.

I was excited to see my favorite magazine cover my favorite sport but this is disappointing. The Reds are not less capitalist than the Dodgers just because they more effectively suppress wages. Framing teams as villains for paying workers what they're worth falls into a trap set by owners.
