We're recruiting!! Myself along with Nathan Gill, Dylan Schwilk @schwilk.org, and Katharine Suding are recruiting people for Master's, PhD, and postdoc positions in GrassFire, an NSF funded project examining fuels and fire risk in grassland ecosystems across the Southern Great Plains! 🔥🌿🐮

Deciphering fire tolerance of #trees at the Amazonia–Cerrado transition by trait-based approach: Implications from species to communities
Wesley Jonatar Cruz, et al.

doi.org/10.1002/ajb2...
How do trees survive fire at the Amazon-Cerrado transition? This graphical abstract reveals how different strategies, like thicker bark, bud protection, and water use efficiency help species survive (or not) in fire-affected areas. The study findings show that fire not only selects the most resilient trees but also reshapes the entire community structure over time.

And we talked a lot about seeds at the #ATBC2025! Thanks @caordonezparra.bsky.social for organizing this amazing symposium and delivering this great talk! @heloizazirondi.bsky.social summed up 10 years of our research about fire and seed ecology in the Cerrado! You guys rock!

From plant traits to fire behavior: Scaling issues in flammability studies

By Dylan Schwilk, Md. Azharul Alam, Nathan Gill et al.

doi.org/10.1002/ajb2... #botany #plantscience
Illustration of methods used to assessed fuel characteristics (moisture, architecture, chemistry and mass) across a range of scales from individual plant organs or excised parts to communities and landscapes. Remote sensing, field measurements, and laboratory work are each suited to assessment of fuel characteristics at different but overlapping portions of this range, thereby creating opportunities to synthesize the “top-down” and “bottom-up” approaches to understanding flammability. Yesterday the BRIVAC, a volunteer fire brigade, did a prescribed fire during the II Seminário Regional do Manejo Integrado do Fogo. In Brazil, local volunteers are essential for the success of fire management, including during wildfires. Bravo BRIVAC!

🌿 The first article of our DarkDivNet consortium, led by Meelis Pärtel, has been published in Nature. Our dataset from 5500 sites in 119 world regions, collected specially for this purpose, shows that plant diversity is negatively affected not only by direct human impact such as local disturbance.

Fire ecology and biodiversity conservation are complex.

Some places might need fewer fires, fires at a different scale and/or fires at a different time of year (intensity/severity).

Some places we might need more fire, etc...
