Thrilled that someone finally made a documentary about the rail trail movement that treats that history for what it is: a fascinating and shockingly controversial story about the right to public space, which is every bit as epic as the battle against the highway movement (which sometimes overlaps).
The Shocking Untold History of America's Rails-to-Trails Movement — Streetsblog USA
Some of the fiercest battles for the future of public space in America have happened on abandoned railway corridors — and the battles aren't over yet.

First time this guy has ever made me laugh
Comedian Tim Dillon said on his podcast last month that he signed up for financial reasons.
He said he had been offered "a large sum of money" - $375,000 for one performance - and said that other comedians had been offered as much as $1.6 million. He told his detractors to "get over it," adding, "So what if they have slaves, they're paying me enough to look the other way."
But in an episode of the Tim Dillon Podcast last week, the comedian announced he'd been removed from the lineup for the comments he made about the country's record on slavery.

Also, homicides are down 50% in Portland this year, to 17 YTD as of August.

But facts like these are irrelevant when Trump can say “sun rises in the west” and the Times reports it, context- and factcheck-free, as a just a statement (of seeming fact) by Trump.
Portland sees steepest drop in homicides among major U.S. cities
A brand new report found that homicides are down in Portland halfway through 2025 when compared to January through June 2024.

In this story they talked to a guy who lives four blocks away (!) from the proposed ADU and is very opposed to anything that changes the neighborhood he's lived in for 40 years. It should not be a surprise that concerns about parking are driving the opposition.
Why a 2-story casita is causing a stir in Tempe
An application for a two-story ADU was accepted by the city until a neighbor caught it. Now, residents are fighting to preserve their neighborhood.

I have a piece in the latest issue of @vitalcitynyc.bsky.social about New York City's very special building codes (evacuation maps! mass timber! drop ceilings! pipes!), and some issues for code reform more broadly www.vitalcitynyc.org/articles/the...
Vital City | The High Price of Fine Print
Overly complex building codes are a big reason why housing construction costs so much.
