kids definitely understand stranger things is a pastiche of 80s movies? I don't think I understand the question. Like I think it would be reasonable to say E.T. is "like Stranger Things" in the same way it would be fair to say 50s rock and roll films were "like Grease" even though Grease came later

Just think about the difference between Mario games back in the 90s and Mario games today. Not only are there modes for young children in a lot of them, the ones that don't have that have more accessibility features for young kids to be able to keep up with adults, so it can be a family activity.
