I study how political parties adapt, endure, and fracture under grassroots and youth wing pressure — and how it affects party change, behavior and representation. 🗳️🔄🏛️

But past ties leave traces: switchers from the left feel warmer toward left parties/leaders and colder toward the right; ex-right switchers show the reverse.

Yet this does not appear to threaten intra-party cohesion. Switchers and first-timers look more alike than different on left-right and core PRR attitudes. When differences do show up, they mostly reflect where switchers came from (left vs. right), rather than switching per se.

About 1 in 4 Chega members are switchers (~25%). Most came from the right (82.4%), especially PSD and CDS-PP. A non-trivial minority came from the left (17.6%).

While mainstream parties have been losing members for decades, populist radical right (PRR) parties keep expanding their grassroots. Is that growth driven mostly by political “newcomers,” or also by former members of other parties? And do these groups differ on core PRR traits?

I may be wrong – and I’m by no means defending APSR – but I do think a similar decision was made in this case. Not sure, though. In any case, the editors should publish the two pieces simultaneously.

This debate brought me back to a great replication course I took in 2023 with @simonhix.bsky.social at @eui-eu.bsky.social. I’m learning a lot from both sides. Critique is welcome -- what we should avoid is turning disagreements into attacks on authors.

I’m the one thanking you! Pleased to see my name in the EJPR for the first time alongside yours and this team! 🥳 Since I’m out of wine, I’ll raise a toast with the last little treat I brought back from Italy! 🍋 Obrigado, Duncan!
