I remember once when my eldest was just about to turn 2, I was having dinner with Daniel Abraham and some other writers, and we were talking about parenting. And Daniel said “You don’t so much raise your kids as get to know them.” And that’s turned out to be the best parenting advice I ever got.
YMMV, of course. And I’m not the boss of you. It’s none of my business how you parent your kids. I’ve just found that when I treat my kids like people with their own needs, rather than as an extension of my own life or desires, I’m both less stressed and more able to take care of their needs.
