As I reported last February, JV didn’t support a lookback because he said it would disproportionately benefit white, suburban teachers. He didn’t give the details on how he reached this conclusion.

Highlights of the lookback
🔵 district will have sole discretion to determine how many lookbacks
🔵 teachers impacted by 2022 start pay adjustment and 2024 new hire salary table may request a review
🔵 CCEA will receive and review applications
🔵 determinations are final

SB428 wasn't an edu bill per se, but its clarifications on electeds living in their districts would have applied to school boards. CCSD has recent experience with this. Had bipartisan support (42-0 Assembly, 14-7 Senate), but gov vetoed it to protect home addresses.

AB217:
*Risks legal confusion between state, feds. Rigid language doesn't account for exceptions (i.e., exigent circumstances).
*"As written, it applies 24/7, effectively transforming school grounds into sanctuary zones at all times."
*Burden on school staff.
June 10, 2025 at 8:33 PM
AB445:
*Vague and overly broad language. "Good faith" is not defined.
*Undermines "existing and appropriate" oversight mechanisms, like school boards and parents.
June 6, 2025 at 9:32 PM
*Opt-in ensures parents are "fully informed about the content" of sex ed classes
*Opt-in respects "diverse values held by families across the state and promotes trust

Still at 33 total vetoes (deadline is 6/13?) We have all those vetoes' explanations now, though. On ed:
AB155:
*Nothing currently keeping unions from bringing up class sizes during bargaining
*Could create need for new schools, bus routes and hiring, leading to legal liability
