For more on the creation of Sputnik, see this collection of declassified and translated Russian documents:

Sputnik was 66 years ago today. I curated a set of about a dozen original Soviet archival sources (translated!) on the origins of the world's first satellite, hosted by The Wilson Center in Washington, DC: www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/ne... #histsci #histtech
New Sources on Sputnik
Documents added to DigitalArchive.org provide a look at the origins of Sputnik, the first Soviet satellite.

This is an absolute travesty. @durba.bsky.social is an absolutely brilliant scholar, writer, teacher, academic. Harvard is lucky that they can claim any connection to her work. In doing this, Harvard is making itself a fucking joke.

This happens at the largest university in the U.S. but barely a peep from media outlets yelling at us for years about attacks on free speech on campuses.

The professor has been fired and senior administrators removed from their post. No mention of this in the New York Times, The Free Press, The Atlantic or other outlets who drove the campus speech moral panic.

Heads up for this excellent special issue of BJHS edited by @actgeppert.bsky.social . Insightful contributions on the cultural construction of 'founding fathers,' 'prophets,' etc. of the space age, taking a very global approach w/ works on Clarke, Sarabhai, Qian Xuesen, etc. I have a small epilogue.

My epilogue to a special issue of British Journal for the History of Science takes on the 'founding figure' archetype in the history of space. Drawing on the work of Ellie Armstrong & Réka Gál (among others), I critique space history's fascination w/ 'great men.' www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

It would be hard to name a band that shaped my sensibilities more than Flipper. RIP Bruce 'Loose' Calderwood. A dadaist genius who trawled through the bottom of the barrel of modern life to find beauty in the banal, quotidian, trivial moments of our meaningless lives.

R.I.P. Bruce “Loose” Calderwood, longtime Flipper vocalist and bassist. Calderwood fronted the San Francisco punks on all four of their studio albums beginning with 1980’s ‘Album – Generic Flipper,’ an LP with a heavy, plodding sound hugely influential to bands like Nirvana. Bruce Loose was 66.

I'm on the job market! I'm seeking interesting places, projects and opportunities at the intersection of STS, political ecology, and environmental humanities. My areas of interest and research so far span these areas and as well as arts-based research and sound studies!

My real-time introduction to Wire and still one of my favorite tracks of theirs. I'm in the minority & absolutely love Wire's '80s technopop run. 1987's 'Ahead' remains one of the finest pop singles they (or anyone) produced in the late '80s. Driving and elastic with nary a rough edge in sight.

James Lovell, one of the last Apollo-era astronauts, passed away today. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1962, he flew two Gemini and two Apollo missions, including the first historic Moon orbit flight in 1968. An absolute legend and rock star.
