Hi #portfolioday

I'm Heather, and I am a traditional fine artist that applies that knowledge to pattern design and 3D.

My favorite things to make look like they belong in a refined witch's cottage: rooted in nature, and exalting wonder. ✨️

This pattern is called 'Wickleigh Bough, Muscovado', and is a large-scale pattern. It has a reddish-brown distressed background, upon which slender white blossoming trees are painted. There are birds in the trees, and butterflies floating between the branches.

It is available in wallpaper and fabric in this and other colors at my Spoonflower shop. This is an oil painting of a Blue Morpho butterfly on a plain (but textured) creamy backgorund. The butterfly is quite large, and its iridescence is rendered in a variety of strokes to emphasize the subtle gradients and delicate textures of the wings. A 3D rendering of a matching teacup and saucer against a dark blue background. They both have a blue interwoven floral pattern (which I designed).

Instead of tea, the teacup contains wispy clouds and bright long-limbed stars, with a crescent moon near the top of the composition.

My intention for this piece was to make something that felt a little like the movie Practical Magic: small but wondrous. An interior shot of a living room or library, the view set just above a tiled fireplace, showing a mantle. There is a large antique framed print of birds, spindly black candlesticks with off-white candles on the mantle.

The wallpaper above the fireplace and to the right of it is something I designed and was inspired by the works of William Morris. It is a symmetrical half-drop pattern and features woodland wildlife (leaping young deer with spots, running rabbits, owls, oaks, blackberry vines). The colors are deep mossy greens, cream, and russet.

On top of designing the wallpaper pattern, I also designed and rendered the whole interior scene in 3D.

The wallpaper is available in my Spoonflower shop.

A secret door.

Who lives here?

What's on the other side?

.....
My design - Inglehedge Garden Tapestry in Midnight - available now in wallpaper and fabric at Spoonflower ( 20340161 )

A scene of an interior, with a partly opened secret door. Mist and golden stars are spilling out of the dark space behind the door.

The wall is paneled halfway up the wall in a light beige, with the top half being in a dark vined wallpaper in shades of blue-gray. There are light colored moths on the leaves. The wood plank floor is dark. There are two sconces (with mirrors and lit candles) on either side of the secret door.

This idyllic pattern is based off of 18th century landscape paintings, toile de jouy, and verdure tapestry.

A detail of a pattern. The subject is a deer in a forested scene, with a cream background, sage green foliage, and tan deer. There are birds and a rabbit in the background.

I have a purple one too!

But I was worried that the main bulk of people would think it was a little weird ( I like weird)
A pattern of leafy vines with a dark background and small white moths fluttering around. This pattern is another colorway of the main post's patterns, only in a warm and slightly subdued purple.

Thank you! Green is one of my favorite colors, so I have to ask other people about things so I don't make everything green! 😂

Left (Midnight) or right (Verdure)?

I based this new wallpaper pattern off of antique tapestries and secret gardens.

An Eye That Looks, miniature, French, from the Louvre

#art #painting #louvre
A small rectangular painting of someone's eye looking back at the viewer. The eye is surrounded by forget-me-not in warm earthy colors. It is framed in what looks like brass and mounted on what looks like a nubbled dark brown leather.

A quick and cute little doodle pattern. Repeat is on the right, if you want it.

#pattern #squirrel #fall #cute #cottagecore #surfacepatterndesign
a repeating pattern that is also symmetrical. The pattern is of two white squirrels facing each other, each blushing and holding an acorn, and below them there is a large sage green oak leaf. The background is a pale beige. It is done in a cute cartoony style. The pattern repeat itself. the only thing different about this and the last picture is that it's a smaller segment that when tiled will repeat.

This one also has the little white squirrels, each with their own acorn, sitting above a large sage green oak leaf.

they're so zazzy!

I am currently imagining them sneaking up on you in little masks and nefarious plots on your well-being (birch trees do the same to me).

Oh, no! I feel the same way about birch trees. Beautiful, but make my head miserable for a bit.

A goldenrod daydream here in New England.

#bloomscrolling #nativeplants #yellow #goldenrod #newengland
A close-up of the top of the goldenrod plant, showing its sprays of tiny yellow flowers. It reminds me of a firework.

The background is filled with other goldenrods, they're out of focus.

I did this one at Navarro Beach during a recent painting retreat. I just now added a slight gradation to the house that made it sit better in the painting. Amazing to me how one tiny change can make such a difference sometimes

Look at this little buddy I had the pleasure of meeting!

#snail #shell #newengland
A close-up picture of a snail on asphalt. The snail takes up the top half of the frame, and is going from left to right. This individual happens to be a warm but pale yellow, and their shell has a thin burnt umber line on the outside. Both the snail and its shell looks like they're made out of glass, very delicate.

It's up until Dec 7, so if you happen to find yourself in the area...(oh, hey, I tripped and fell into Boston! Guess I'll go to the MFA)

It was amazing!

The Ruysch exhibition is going on until Dec 7, so you've got time.
hmcraig.bsky.social
If you're in the Boston/New England area, I highly recommend the Rachel Ruysch exhibition going on at the Museum of Fine Arts.

It feels like magic, and also has specimens from @harvard alongside her work.

#Stunday #RachelRuysch #Boston #art #lizard #peach #butterfly #painting #fineart #sciart
A detail of a painting by Rachel Ruysch, a 17th century dutch painter who intensely studied the natural world.

This detail shows a butterfly (black wings with bands of orange and white spots) and a small bluish lizard in the foreground, with a stack of peaches, a chestnut, grapes, a pear and leaves in the background. The lizard looks either playful or alarmed at the butterfly, but I don't know much about lizards, so maybe she's just hungry.
