Making silly games at @TurboButtonInc.bsky.social. Bucket's dad. Occasional sports person. Opinions and content posted here are bad and should be ignored by everyone. (he/him)
I rolled credits on more than a dozen games this year, way more than my usual 5 or 6. The release calendar was just terrifyingly crowded with great games. I'll have to slow down if this continues in 2026.

Some honorable mentions that should be on more lists...

I've spent a lot of time thinking about how the "gulf of execution/evaluation" from that book overlaps improv comedy, as designing systems that can "yes, and" with users.

Has made me a big gen AI skeptic because I see so many people mistaking the "yes, and" loop for intelligence.

Never seen a platform apply for one on our behalf, but we have been contacted and forced to change a rating post-launch.

(our example: we had a cigarette butt in an ash tray in the background art of one level, which was flagged as a tobacco reference and moved us up a rating in some territories)

Thanks for this, was great to see some of these games highlighted and I hope to see these movements grow! We sent holiday cards to all the platforms and publishers we work with last year to make our studio's stance on it as clear as we could.

Nobody at Turbo Button could figure out how to make an AI-generated greeting card. But we heard studios like us are expected to use AI for everything now, so we commissioned some of our favorite artists to hand draw what they think those cards might have looked like.

Here's what they came up with.

this is still the closest thing we've done to using AI at our studio

Tons of stuff broke from 2019 to 2021 and then again from 2021 to 2022. We published on 7 different platforms with massively different specs, and it was a *huge* pain, I can empathize!

"EA Sports. It's Indie Game."

We have gotten good at controlling it over the years with VR, where hitches meant a cert fail from the platforms. It's a huge pain in the ass to deal with, but it's possible!
