Conceptual synthesis uniting biology's macro- and microbiological worlds into an enveloping representation of life. Holobiont = host and all associated microbes. Hologenome = all of their genomes. Link: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ado2152

Microbes = climate allies.
Our new editorial calls for a global alliance to put microbial science at the center of climate action. 🌱🌍

Because microbes cross every border—so should our solutions.

Microbes without borders: uniting societies for climate action
Abstract. The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time, yet the role of microorganisms remains underrecognized in climate science and p

This is next level, important, and inspiring. Very well done.

The findings suggest that both host genetics and environmental factors, such as geographic location, influence the mosquito hologenome. Understanding these relationships is crucial because a mosquito's microbiome can affect its ability to transmit diseases. From @vectorgen.bsky.social & Co.

The landscape of microbial associations in human cancer www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

TLDR -- most cancers do not have microbiomes...but a few do have consistent microbe associations (i.e., colorectal and oral cancers). Make sense!
The landscape of microbial associations in human cancer
Differences between cancer types, infectious disease, and potential prognostic markers are uncovered by studying microbes within cancer DNA.

Human fungi-associated variants (FAVs) associate with 9 fungal taxa and overlap protein-coding genes. A Manhattan plot shows all FAVs and their associated fungal taxa at the three significance levels (exploratory, black; genome-wide, red; study-wide, blue).

Stop the press. There may be a universal PCR marker for covering all biodiversity. “we demonstrate the applicability & effectiveness of the JEDI marker approach for quantifying and monitoring biodiversity across scales, from individual holobionts to whole ecosystems” www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
The JEDI marker as a universal measure of planetary biodiversity
Despite its critical importance in the formation and maintenance of ecosystems and homeostasis on Earth, biodiversity remains a complex and non-unified concept. Consequently, standards for measuring g...

Analogously, think of the terms holoenzyme vs. enzyme. A host is conceptually the enzyme, and the microbe is then the cofactor...in a very simple binary form. Cofactors, like microbes, come and go to affect form and function.

The host and microbial genomes of a holobiont are collectively defined as a hologenome. Hologenome is fundamentally similar to the words genome and chromosome in that they all reflect different levels of biological information. The terms holobiont and hologenome are therefore structural definitions.
