#KristinMiller raises good points, but her @hsunitedorg.bsky.social is an association of shelter providers. For a perspective from the other side, read my 39-point "Advice for the Next Mayor of New York City".

In NYC, 20% of people diagnosed with TB in 2024 had been homeless in the previous 12 months. Most single adult homeless New Yorkers live in shelters with large congregate dorms.

A commenter saw somebody paying for groceries with food stamps & loading them into a brand new Kia. Is a person who gets food stamps allowed to have a friend, relative, or good Samaritan volunteer with a brand new Kia willing 2 give them a ride to bring groceries home? How about a Mercedes? A Tesla?

Would you point it out to @rtfhsd.bsky.social that their data omits ("erases") important phenomena and groups of people?

I'd also be willing to work with people who have first-hand experience with homelessness as kids, teens, or young adults under 24. All I've done is "How to Get Into a Homeless Shelter for Young People in NYC".

How to Get Into a Homeless Shelter for Young People in NYC
(Rev. 8/16) Summer is in, school is out, some young people decide to take a vacation and travel to a big city. Some run out of money and can’t afford to come back home, some don’t want …

Thanks. I write words on paper and ASCII characters online, but I understand that the world is becoming less literary (& literate) and more visual. I'd work with visual artists to create comic-book-style guides to homelessness, like my #Howto category.

And @lisahalverstadt.bsky.social: you say "1,021 exited homelessness", but the chart says 1,021 homeless San Diegans were housed. Has nobody left #SanDiego, disappeared into the woods, or died? Wasn't the death rate like 10% of the homeless in a year?

3. And why don't you sort the pie by slice size in descending order? Most people want to know which categories are the biggest, sometimes also the smallest.

2. Instead of a mathematician's #PieChart going anticlockwise from 3pm, why don't you go clockwise from 12 o'clock? I think it's more intuitive #DataViz, easier to understand for most people, including mathematicians.

Two questions for the @rtfhsd.bsky.social:

1. How many #HomelessDeaths? Let's not forget that they're one of the ways people are permanently removed from homelessness, but they're not something government agencies or nonprofits can be proud of as "results".

I started making a picture book on drop-in centers for the homeless. For more about drop-in centers, see "How to Get Into a Drop-in Center in NYC".

How to Get Into a Drop-in Center in NYC
It’s cold outside. Homeless folks who aren’t ready to go to shelters should first try drop-in centers. There are chairs (no beds), food, showers, and it’s possible to stay overnig…

It looks cool, I like it.

Small thing: shouldn't the smokestacks go deep into the ship, all the way to the engine rooms?

It looks interesting.

The closest to this I've done is "How to get into a NYC homeless shelter for families with kids", but it's meant for the adults who will take the kids there and into the families-with-kids system.

Shouldn't we then exercise our power to make the law do justice more often?

If your favorite party has no viable candidate, maybe you should look for a different party? The Greens, the Libertarians, the Working Families? Or you could consider running yourself. For Community Board president or for City Council, you only need a few thousand votes.
