This is great! Every student that lives on campus takes pressure off of Victoria's rental market, and reduces commuting. The University has the land—they just need the money to build. Funding this UVic residence was a win-win decision, and one the province should keep repeating.

Mayor: "This is not perfect at all, let's be frank" but it was a big task and there's a vision here. Speaks in favour.

Saanich is hosting two in-person open houses on the updated Shelbourne Valley Plan, including important plans for new housing and stronger, more connected communities.

+ You can still have your voice heard on housing & community planning through the online survey 🙂

Under the proposed changes, the share of James Bay zoned for six storey buildings would increase only modestly, from about 26% of its residential area to 30%. Hardly the radical overhaul some fear.
homesforliving.ca
Staff also noted that change happens gradually. There is a big difference between permitted density and actual density. Most single lots will not see six storey buildings, many will not even allow four, and using the full density would require land assembly, which is costly and slow.
homesforliving.ca
But staff clarified that, among the city’s 12 defined neighbourhoods, James Bay ranks 4th densest, after Downtown, North Park, and Fernwood.

After another long night of Victoria’s OCP hearings, deliberations will resume Oct 2.

James Bay was well represented; with many speakers warning the neighbourhood is already too dense.

We’ll soon know the outcome of Victoria’s new Official Community Plan.

Thanks to all who spoke up for housing, including director Sam Holland, who put it plainly:

“My entire generation is being displaced... doesn’t that matter more than character?”

Victoria OCP decision likely to come Thursday, after lengthy public hearings
Monday night’s session reflected a growing generational divide on the draft plan, as well as James Bay residents’ frustration with carrying the burden of densification.

Are different areas in Greater Vic pulling their weight to get us out of the housing crisis? A member on our discord made an awesome visualization to help find out

Congratulations to @christineboyle.bsky.social, a staunch advocate for ensuring that everyone belongs in Vancouver by legalizing more apartments. We're excited to see the next stage of progress on this file!

A _huge_ thank you to @ravikahlon.bsky.social for his efforts to legalize new housing across BC. We're confident that future generations will look back and see the legislation he introduced as a significant turning point in our neighbourhoods becoming more affordable and inclusive.

It was an honor to serve as B.C.s housing minister over the last two years. We led the most significant housing reforms in B.C. history and made the largest investment in affordable housing in decades. My deepest thanks to all the ppl in the housing sector🙏🏾

We're pleased that after last night's vote, the draft Quadra-McKenzie Plan will now move forward to round 4 of public consultation.

However, we're concerned about the hostile reception many supporters of the plan, particularly young people, received from other members in the audience.

Saanich Council moves forward with Quadra-McKenzie Plan
Saanich - July 8th, 2025

Last night, Saanich council voted to receive a staff report containing an updated draft of the Quadra-McKenzie Plan, which will now proceed to a fourth round of public engagement.

"Building townhomes and apartments in existing single family neighborhoods is critical for solving the housing shortage. That's why we support the QMP, which would legalize thousands of new homes near transit, schools, and other amenities" said Jack Sandor, president of Homes for Living. "Furthermore, we condemn the hostile treatment many young people received from people opposed to the plan in the audience. Booing, jeering, and profane insults are unacceptable and only serve to make speaking before council more daunting."

In addition to booing and shouting that had to be shut down by the Mayor, at least four different young people in the audience reported harassment from other audience members, including homophobic and other graphic insults. "We are grateful to Mayor Murdock for doing what he can to ensure Saanich council is a place everyone feels comfortable to share their views."
