Despite concerns over data, I still need to be convinced the core ideas of these papers are wrong.

Colonial Origins, Atlantic Traders, and Reversal of Fortunes. These studies are important not because they’re flawless, but because they conveyed novel insights and convinced economists that history matters. That’s what great research does, even if it’s later challenged.

Thanks to AJR, an entire line of research into long-run development has emerged over the past 20 years. I probably wouldn’t be in academia without their pioneering work. Every year, I tell my students this when we cover their landmark papers:
