Thank you. I have found another hoverfly on the painting Still life with Bird’s nest - Jan Van Huysum 1718 - i think its the Narcissus Bulb Hoverfly (Merodon equestris) which came over to the UK through the bulb importation trade first recorded 1869 by G.H.Verrall

It certainly looks like a hoverfly and if it is then it is most likely a marmalade as there is nothing else on the continent that it could be. But there isn't really enough detail to be certain. Any ideas where this painting was created?

That is amazing, you keep finding these hoverflies within paintings and books. Thank you. It certainly looks like White-clubbed Glasswing (Scaeva pyrastri) i will investigate further.
