Thank you. I have found another hoverfly on the painting Still life with Bird’s nest - Jan Van Huysum 1718 - i think its the Narcissus Bulb Hoverfly (Merodon equestris) which came over to the UK through the bulb importation trade first recorded 1869 by G.H.Verrall

It certainly looks like a hoverfly and if it is then it is most likely a marmalade as there is nothing else on the continent that it could be. But there isn't really enough detail to be certain. Any ideas where this painting was created?

What a fascinating article. How cool it must be to have wildlife on everyones doorstep throughout the estate, it must make for a better relationship with neighbours. I also think that to get the community focused in a project such as this as they move in may help protect it longer term.
