Tibetans inside China have found various ways to push back against Beijing and voice their dissatisfaction. A lesser-known form of subtle resistance is the art of “zurza,” or satirical repartee.

Over 1.5 yrs ago, Pasang Yangjee Sherpa invited me to UBC, and Mabel Gergan, and Dolly Kikon, began talking about the question of Indigeneity and belonging in Nepal and Northeast India, and whether and how that frames our work. Fast forward 18 months and here we are! October 22nd, Madison, WI.

My favourite film from TIFF was Kunsang Kyirong's ‘100 Sunset’, about a young, almost mute, Tibetan-Canadian woman who steals a camcorder to spy on people in her apartment building. It felt so fresh and full of energy and thrillingly unpredictable. You can read my FIPRESCI essay about it here:

Beijing is threatening to imprison student-activist Zhang Yadi for years for speaking out against racial injustice and peacefully exercising her rights. She should be starting graduate school in London, not jail. Governments should press for her freedom.

Mostly non-pro actors are fine, superbly directed. The way the story is stealthily structured, how it compresses and expands, and comes together in a rush of karma and sense and joy is just remarkable. The best Canadian debut feature of 2025, I bet. 2/2

Kunsang Kyirong: 100 SUNSET (TIFF 2025). Beautiful first feature set in Toronto’s Tibetan community centre: Parkdale. Kunsang's eye is unerring: she transforms my dull dull Toronto into a place with cinematic character, like few other filmmakers have managed to do. 1/2
