The lioness is the key to survival for their pride. Strong, fast, protective and nurturing, as well as skilled hunters and providers, they are among the best mothers in the animal kingdom. 💙

Once the lioness returns to the pride with her cubs, they begin integrating with the other members, often by playing with the other adults and cubs.

All the lionesses work together for the pride, and raising the little ones is no exception. They will suckle each others’ cubs without bias.

When a lioness is about to give birth, she will leave the pride temporarily to find or make a den that will be home for her and her cubs for the next two or so months.

The lioness will usually have between one and four cubs per litter. To keep them safe, she will relocate them often to new dens.

There are key differences between male and female lions, not least the mane. The males are larger; the females have a smaller but compact and muscular build. They are also faster and have greater stamina, all useful features in a hunter and protector.

Lion prides are mostly composed of females, cubs and then a few males. The lionesses are usually lifetime members of the pride, with most of them related to each other; they will only leave if there scarcity of food or territory.

Today, African lions are found in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa. Asiatic lions are now only found in Gir National park, Gujurat, India.

While most prides contain around fifteen lions, larger groups have been observed.

LIONESSES

In any pride, the lioness forms the core of the group. To her falls the majority of the labour and responsibility. From raising cubs, to hunting and protecting the pride’s territory, she is very much how the group survives and thrives.

Crazy Nests: A Red Pandas Hideaway

Within their bamboo habitat, red pandas construct nests to rest, sleep & rear their young. These nests are usually built in the hollows of trees or in the forks of branches, high above the ground to keep them safe from ground-dwelling predators..

Did you know...?

Red pandas not only build a heit cozy nests high up in trees to avoid predators but also cleverly choose locations close to their favorite food source, bamboo.
This allows them to have easy access to it without having to venture too far away from their safe hideaway!

8. #RedPanda subspecies

The Himalayan red panda's whiter coat helps it blend into it's mountain habitat, providing better camouflage against potential predators. Their fur is more muted & their facial markings are less distinct.
It can be found in the lush, misty forests of the Eastern Himalayas.

The Chinese red panda calls southwestern China and northern Myanmar home. This panda sports a more vibrant reddish coat, giving it a slightly bolder appearance. Their facial markings are more pronounced with darker "teartracks" under their eyes.

Similarities & shared challenges

Despite the difference in their physical appearance & their geographical range, both subspecies share many similarities: same diet, mostly bamboo, & exhibit similar behavior & social structures. They share the same threats as well.

11. #RedPanda in zoo Karlsruhe

Today we visited our zoo. We have two red pandas, a boy and a girl, I think Himalayan pandas, the caretaker didn't know. I always seem to ask hard questions.
I learned today that they're loners.

#RedPanda and that marvelous tail

Their bushy, ringed tails are not only eye-catching but also serve a practical purpose. The alternating light & dark rings work as fantastic camouflage among the sunlight of the forest. They also help balance when they climb a tree or leap from branch to branch.
