The Washington legislature has hearings today on the Driver Privacy Act, regulating Flock and other ALPRs (licence plate readers).

The Senate Law & Justice hearing starts at 8:00, but there are several bills before SB 6002, and some of them have a lot of testifiers. #waleg

Optionally, also click on Manage Workspace Smart Features and opt out of the other stuff.
Box shows two options: Under Smart Features, Untick "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet." Optionally, click on "Manage Workspace smart feature settings" and turn both of those options off. You will lose the recommended things like "Book table" (when browsing a restaurant), but it will be less information leaking to Google.

I did some extensive reworking of the VPN knowledgebase article to (hopefully) a better explanation of why someone would want to use one for browsing. Suggestions appreciated.
Imagine you are mailing a spicy, handwritten letter to your friend TeeNA. Your postal carrier can see there is a letter in your outbox and that that it is addressed to TeeNA. They also know whether you receive a response letter from TeeNA. One way you can hide your activities from your mailman is to put the letter inside a second, different envelope addressed to your trustworthy friend Mully. By arrangement, when Mully receives your mail, the open the outer envelope and send the inner envelope onto TeeNA. TeeNA's reply is sent to Mully, who puts her letter inside a second, different envelope and mails it to you. By doing this, your mailman only sees you exchanging a lot of letters with Mully. Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is kind of the same concept, but with Internet traffic. When browsing TNA, using a VPN means: It is harder for your Internet Service Provider (the "mailman" in this analogy) to spy on you. In the US (and some other countries), your ISP is legally allowed to sell your browsing history to advertisers and data brokers, allowing them to better target ads and build up demographic profiles of you. Your history may also be subpoenaed by the government. To a third party, your traffic appears to be coming from the VPN. You must be able to trust your VPN provider. Mully (the VPN in this analogy) may not view or tamper with the innermost letter. Ideally, Mully should not keep track of who sent letters to whom. This is called "no-logs policy." Even if the VPN provider were subpoenaed, they will be unable to provide any useful information to snooping authorities.

Oh, I love this. A new species of sea anemone was discovered recently that parks itself on top of a hermit crab shell like a hat. It seems to feed partly off the crab's faeces, but it also excretes a hard shell that extends the crab's home. In return, it's carried around the seafloor like a king.

I can *so* relate to this. Heating went two days before New Years and no HVAC company was returning calls. Found helpful videos to diagnose and repair the issue.

New: a $60 mod to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses disables the privacy LED light. This is supposed to light when people are filming with the glasses. We bought the mod, verified it works. Now you can never be sure whether someone wearing Meta Ray-Bans is filming you or not

Sourdough rye was a success!
Loaf of sourdough rye bread cooked ina Dutch oven. There are some tiny areas where the thin folds were extra brown, but otherwise the loaf has a fine appearance and excellent texture.

There are also three examples of "privacy leakage" that have occurred there. Please let me know if there are things you would add.
Use a dedicated phone number. Consider using Signal If you use a separate device, set up a separate account. Use a browser that honors privacy Use a password manager. Use a dedicated email service Use a VPN. If you travel frequently, consider bringing a travel router. Never use your dating device for social media where you are uncomfortable with that ID being shared. If you upload photos, remove metadata and, please, crop out extraneous things.
