Back in #Devon & making Sloe Gin. When I first made it in the 90s I'd wait til the first frost. Now I have to pop them in the freezer which is a bit ironic really.

This Barn Swallow did not look impressed that I was taking its photo whilst it was having a preen on its long journey south!! Such beautiful birds. Safe onward journey. #birds #birdphotography #birdsseenin2025 #migration #swallow #canonphotography

Same in Devon and in Extremadura in the Pyrenean Oaks. There is a theory that some trees (especially Beech) somehow coordinate seed production to overwhelm small mammals etc that feed on the seed, usually followed by a very low production year which leads to die off of the small mammal population.

What a strange anomaly in the statistics, I wonder what could be the reason...

Looks very impressive Gerard.

...2/2 Over a series of three videos the fox decided to stop the filming, this is the last video. You can hear the exertion in its breath. Apparently I should have sought its permission before filming.

Back to the camera trap... Following the Genet & the Beech Marten a Red Fox turned up, all three within a few hours of nightfall on the first night of a 4 night stint, I was hopeful of lots more. But unfortunately this fox had other ideas.. 1/2

"Except, he is only benefitting his own perception of what nature should be, rather than what it really is" - a review by @ianparsons.bsky.social that is well worth a read.

There was an old Drove Road behind the cottage where we stayed.
Look at the magnificent solitary male Boar who appeared in the pre-dawn light last night. You can make out his tusks.
So many Muntjac in the Forest...

Yeah also called Stone Marten, much more terrestrial than their cousins. Can't think of a Beech tree within a 100kms of where I filmed that - not a tree adapted to Extremadura's climate! Beautiful creatures, we've had one seen in the village square on the rooftops, would love to see it.

Not sure I'll be able to spot it amongst the multi million others... Spain is certainly a favoured wintering destination as this ringing recovery map from anillamiento SEO shows.

Lots of Glossy Ibis in Extremadura at the moment, this one posing nicely with a Cattle Egret.
