Just last month, US Treasury imposed a record fine of $216m on a venture capital fund for sanctions violations, widely seen by lawyers as a warning shot to the fund industry.

But yesterday US Treasury exempted the fund industry from anti-money laundering checks for at least two years.

The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control said a venture capital firm managed a $20 million investment for Suleiman Kerimov, a member of Putin’s inner circle, after he was sanctioned in 2018, calling the case “egregious”.
