On this day, 19 July 1936, the rebel Spanish military rose in Barcelona against the elected government. An unusual combination of anarchist and other workers with the loyal police, often fighting side by side, defeated them. By the next day. 450 lay dead. Photo Pérez de Rozas

A nice map by Mile Hall showing English author Laurie Lee's walk across Spain on the cusp of war in 1936 which he narrated in "As I walked out one midsummer's morning", one of the greatest walks in English literature.

Mid C18th Castell de Sant Ferran, Figueres, Catalonia. The largest fortress in Europe outside of Russia. It's vast 32ha was useless militarily from opening. Used as mustering station for the International Brigades during the Civil War and prison later for 1981 coup figure Tejero

On this day on 14 April 1931 the 2nd Spanish Republic was declared. Its arrival was greeted with euphoria by progressive Spain, including intially by anarchist masses. Its greatest achievement: creating some 16,000 schools until crushed by Franco +his Nazi-fascist allies in 1939
