The problem with JD Vance is, to quote Krusty the Clown, that the pie gag is only funny when the sap's got dignity, and everyone can tell that Vance has no dignity. Everything comes off as skin-crawlingly inauthentic no matter what the context is. It's like watching someone try to wear a skin suit.
