I’m hoping my sense of humour makes it into beta testing soon.

I do a bit of astronomy when not fiddling with software for a living.
I’m waiting for Venezuela to be renamed Trumpland.

Hopes for a nothing-dramatic 2026 have faded fast.

Cloudy open evening at the observatory, discussing the planets in the solar system with a super well-informed schoolgirl.

“Do you know what else these planets have in common?” “No.” “You can’t see them at all through this amount of cloud.”

2026 feels like a good year for curiosity, creativity, kindness and humour.
Division and outrage have had a long run. Maybe we give them a rest.

Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and sending lots of love, especially to those who feel like things are getting worse, that they aren't wanted, that they are just the punching bags of society. You are amazing. You may not see them right now, but there are people all around who care. Hold in there.

To all my friends, have a happy Yule, and I hope the elder god Delia will bring you a huge log.

The world is weird. Why wait until Christmas or birthdays to buy loved ones presents? They’re loved ones; treat them whenever you can.
Why have a “season of goodwill?” Just be kind to people all the time. Bollocks.

Just oven dried all my telescope silica gel packs. Astronomy in England is like taking a cold shower with your telescope. I’m never sure whether it’s a dew-shield or a snorkel.

I hate wrapping presents. I’m pretty happy to give them, but wrapping - ugh! I even tried becoming a Buddhist for a couple of years to avoid it.

I’m officially frozen. The weather station says it’s 4°C, but my feet are ice. Still, it’s a great observing session. I’m indoors with a mug of hot chocolate. In my 20s, I’d have had several single malts. I’ve changed from a hard astronomer to something hand-knitted by the Women’s Institute.

Festive public service announcement:
This month’s session is on Saturday 27th, not the usual last Friday. Why? Because it’s Boxing Day otherwise, and frankly we can’t compete with turkey sandwiches, Quality Street, or a dangerously ambitious cheeseboard.

Turn up when you fancy, gaze skywards, mutter “ooh” at the universe, and head home whenever cold, tiredness, or common sense kicks in.

It won’t cost you a penny, but donations are very welcome - they help keep the telescopes pointed skywards and not at the car park.

So far I’m rather impressed with SkySafari 8 Pro. The images, plate solving etc is rather nicely done.

So, supposedly, five years of social media history is required to get a visa to get into the USA. Now Meta and X will hand it over shrink-wrapped, but what about Bluesky and Mastodon?

Or is this all a hoax? One report asks for IP addresses, which is hysterical.

Despite what you hear from fossil fuel-funded politicians, the U.K has just generated a record amount of clean, domestic wind energy.

Enough to power 23 million homes!

U.K decarbonisation policy is a recipe for energy security.

Why does a release note of “bug fixes and performance improvements” always sound like “we compiled with the latest toolchain and it didn’t explode”?

This Friday the 12th I get to speak to a group who actually want to hear about astronomy — my family assures me this is a rare treat.

I promise enthusiasm, a few interesting facts, and hopefully no accidental slides I meant to delete. If you’re around on the 12th, come along!

I really miss the “exploding” cheese rolls the ICL canteen did in Stevenage.

One bite and the cheese hit as hard as the bits of crust bouncing over your desk.
