i do feel like folklore broke a lot of people's brains from all angles, there's such a degree of wish fulfilment in the idea of the biggest pop star in the world making a play for indie cred that some people will be clinging onto it with their cold dead hands

i actually think what animates taylor - apart from playing music and being a pop star - is status, she wants to be on top and thru red, 1989, reputation and folklore there were always big moves she needed to make to achieve that. these last few albums are v much 'dog that caught the car' syndrome

i do wonder if there's a readover from indie artists and a kind of "the muse has to take me", tho more often than not these days i just feel like a lot of them haven't got enough money to keep churning stuff out

certainly it could be argued that a long album cycle for the big stars developed to enable the label to milk every last drop of commerce from the record and not oversaturate the market before coming back, the notion that it was about high minded artistic ideals feels very...quaint?

i think there's a swing back recently in pop to getting something out every 18 months that has not imv been detrimental to quality overall, it's not the like four tops releasing three albums of filler every year or something (i'm not reading that, god knows i've got more self respect)
