This is my advice for my friends here on Bluesky.
It's going to be a long four years. Pace yourself.
The troll-presidency is a sad thing to behold. I pity journalists who have to cover it. I haven't turned away or turned news off completely but, intuitively, I must separate the wheat from the chaff. Lord, there's so much chaff! The next 4 years will be little more than a daily barrage of insulting headlines that are an erosion for the soul. The key to being an effective citizen is to know what is in your control to change and not be swayed by the dreck with which you're going to be confronted.

President Lyndon Johnson invoked the insurrection law in Alabama,1965 to PROTECT civil rights activists.

Trump would do so to make war ON Americans for NO GOOD REASON.

Every accusation by these authoritarians is a confession of their own undeniable bend toward social violence.

It's so contrived, and at the same time so perilous.

Justin Pearson, a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, announced on Wednesday that he planned to challenge U.S. Representative Steve Cohen, a fellow Memphis Democrat. Pearson was briefly expelled in 2023 after leading a gun control protest from the chamber floor.

He's barking up an illogical tree. It's a sign of healthy progressivism to recognize the world of difference between support for diversity in society and sensing the difference in political opinions among diverse individuals.

It's Lisa McClain, who pretends to think it's preposterous to hear a journalist ask the guy who's 2nd in the line of succession about the state of our nation.
It's sickening to see this kind of behavior from her.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is releasing a county-by-county breakdown today of how health insurance premiums will increase in New York without an extension of Obamacare. [Politico]

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is releasing a county-by-county breakdown today of how health insurance premiums will increase in New York without an extension of Obamacare enhanced tax credits. At least 1.6 million New Yorkers will face an average yearly increase of $1,360 in the amount they pay for their premiums, Gillibrand said.

The Democrat’s chart shows an individual earning $65,000 in Tompkins County could see a 314 percent hike in monthly premiums — from $194.81 to $806.31 — between this year and next.

Powerful writing, Meredith.
There's a clear absence of authenticity in Democratic messaging. They see what our communities and people are going through, yet their leadership is falling horriby short of meeting the moment in much-needed defense of self-government and civil liberties.

"The rise of right-wing extremism in the corridors of the Capitol aligned almost perfectly with the rapid ascent of social media. And yet Democrats struggle to accept that the information environment has changed into a Hobbesian wilderness, even now."

Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

“…the president of the U.S. wants to turn that heavily funded, extramilitary military into a force to be unleashed against the American people, to do war crimes against us. Who authorized and appropriated that funding? Was it Congress? (Spoiler alert: It was.)”

While bad, worse is the fact that this sheriff is helping ICE arrest people through their 287g program. (Some of these southern raids are not getting much attention.) The video shows deputies beating up a man on the side of the road.

A good thread about Christopher Caldwell, who wrote an opinion in defense of "Hegseth’s rabidly bigoted, sexist speech in the New York Times."
Thomas Zimmer says that Caldwell "wrote a whole book about how the Civil Rights Act constitutes an illegitimate departure from the Constitution." 🧵
thomaszimmer.bsky.social
Even the “respectable” thought leaders on the Right are clearly not arguing from within a consensus that America should exist as a pluralistic democracy. To Caldwell, that’s a dangerous pipe dream, lacking the necessary national cohesion; and more importantly, it’s an affront to the “natural” order.
