Unless you playing with a VVT, most maps in a TTRPG talbe are pretty small, so range is not something I even consider. That's better for wargames where the maps are considerably bigger, and tactics are the main core of the gameplay.

I can enjoy both, but if I had to stick to one only, I'll probably choose combat with maps as it allows me to visualise the action better and makes it a bit more tactical.

It depends on the game. For a rules light game, maybe a cinematic one may be the best option, for a crunchy one, maybe something a bit more tactical. But I'll consider it on a game by game basis.

As a game designer, I'm mostly interested in the mechanics and world building. I wish I could play all my games, I just don't have the time or energy for it.

Not really. Most games either are either easy and shallow or crunchy and deep. But I think Year 0 from Freeleague is one of the closest to that effect. The whole Easy to learn and hard to master, is something in trying to apply to my system.

Light at surface level, crunchy in depth. Easy to learn, hard to master.

Also when you need to know the degree of success as it will affect the narrative.

Like everything is about having a balance. Too much player agency and you lose control of the game and there's no challenge, too restrictive and you'll frustrate your players and hinder the game play.

Snogging must be rough 😅

In Spain we add squid ink to certain dishes, it's tasty and it adds darkness to your plates.🙂
