For me I react much in the same way I would if someone told me they were having a physical issue. "That's awful, I'm sorry you're going through that. I hope things get better for you soon." You can throw in a "let me know if i can do anything to help you" if you're close enough.

One of the suckiest things about mental issues is how you can't talk about it. I can say "I've been having a back spasm and muscle aches" and people are sympathetic but i can't say "I've been crying and thinking about killing myself every day for months" without people getting weird about it

most people don't take kindly to random strangers diagnosing obsession without prior knowledge or context. people truly will just slap down something on black and white as if there is never any nuance, as if you can't do and think and say several things at the same time.

like. we rly are not allowed to FEEL anything. god forbid any of us express sadness over the fact that fewer and fewer people read, or feel upset that we can't get eyes on our work. no no, we're not allowed to be upset, because that must mean we only ever did it for attention and nothing else!

all a writer has to do is say "wow that sure was a bummer that no one read the thing i put so much work into!" for the community to start banshee shrieking "write for yourself or fail" as if writing for ourselves AND wanting as social creatures for our art to be seen and acknowledged can't coexist

Sorry but I'm going to have to disagree. Obviously attention isn't everything, but artists of any medium have a right to be upset when no one is looking at what they've made.

If my post gets even one person to pick up a book they otherwise wouldn't have then it was worth it imo.

Please read books. Please just try. Even if there's no audiobook. Even if it's difficult. It sucks so much watching amazing books die in obscurity because the people who would be most interested in them don't read books.
