Aspiring good neighbor.

I wrote about the unique threats unaccompanied minors face right now.

About how ICE is detaining and deporting children. And how the processes meant to provide care are being weaponized against them.

Our most vulnerable are suffering—and it’s only going to get worse.
We are failing our most vulnerable.
No, it’s not just you. Things really have gotten much worse.

Catastrophic.
This is a travesty & a nightmare. The US was a founder of @gavi.org. It lowers global vaccine costs, has vaccinated 1B children, & averted 19M deaths. This pull out will cost 100s of thousands of children's lives a year - and RFK Jr will be personally responsible.

In San Antonio today, plainclothes ICE officers (not masked this time) arrested, handcuffed, and zip-tied a family of five (yes, ALL of them, including the little children) coming out of their immigration court hearing — which ICE had just had dismissed.

I wrote this piece nearly a decade ago—about a kid I avoided at an after-school program, and what he unexpectedly taught me about presence, failure, and what it really means to be a neighbor.

Back then, I thought showing up meant fixing things. I’m still learning that usually it just means staying.

If you’re still reading my Substack—I'm surprised!, but thank you.

Since I began, the focus has been on immigration: deep dives, policy untangling, how it plays out in our neighborhoods. What it means to be a good neighbor when systems fail the vulnerable.

But that’s not all I want to tell.

Incredible reporting by the Washington Post on the Trump administration's hurried, lawless effort to carry out illegal renditions to El Salvador - to terrorize people. (Including how they violated court directives.)

The administration rounded up some of the Venezuelans two days before the flights took off, pressing forward even as Venezuela agreed to accept deportees.

When my son started handing out Know Your Rights cards at school, we thought we were preparing for the occasional emergency.

Now, more and more of those emergencies are routine headlines.

This is a personal reflection on how we got here — and how communities can hold when institutions betray us.
When Institutions Fail, Communities Must Endure
From ICE raids to state-sanctioned trafficking, the erosion of due process isn’t coming — it’s here. What’s left is how we look out for each other.

Sufjan Stevens' Carrie and Lowell helped me name the ache.
This is a Holy Week reflection about grief that stays with us, and wounds that never heal.

“If you want to get on in this life, there are things you have to ignore.”
That line from Small Things Like These stayed with me—and pushed me to write.
This piece is about proximity, comfort, and the quiet decisions that shape who we become, and who is left on the margins.
What Do We Ignore?
Our comfort often depends on what we’re willing to overlook.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind.

An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one."

The other said, "Take him anyway."

So they did.
