The daily CO2 number from Mauna Loa exceeded 430 ppm yesterday. This is the first reading above 430 ever recorded.

CO2 levels have not been this high since the Pliocene epoch, 3 to 5 million years ago.

This is not a surprise. We know what causes CO₂ to increase in the atmosphere and we know how to stop climate change. We just don’t want to.

Based on carbon budgets from Lamboll et al www.nature.com/articles/s41... - updated to January 2025, the global rate for cutting CO2 inline with a 50% chance of not exceeding 1.5°C is ~19% year on year. For "well below 2°C" its ~7% each year; i.e. a technology revolution AND profound social change.

The 2024 Global Carbon Budget was just released! Unfortunately despite hopes emissions might peak, both fossil CO2 and total CO2 emissions reached new record highs. I cover details w/ Pierre Friedlingstein (@PFriedling) at Carbon Brief: www.carbonbrief.org/...

To keep below 1.5°C, with a 50-50 chance, would require global CO2 emissions to be zero in ~2038 (orange line).

The other scenarios (blue) overshoot to ~1.6°C before going back <1.5°C in 2100 (& they start with a global carbon price in 2020).
