Yes! And also, when faced with complex environmental management issues, people yelling "just take all the gravel out of the river bed like we used to back in the old days" is like saying "the combination always starts with 27 - I can't believe you have to be told this!"

So many. But - Ulysses, Julius Caesar (for Marc Antony's speech at his funeral, when I was about 10), Dream of the Red Chamber/Story of the Stone, Les Miserables (the musical and then the book), Barrow's Boys, The Last Place on Earth, and everything by Primo Levi.
