I argue in the blog this week why the next Spending Review would be remiss not to focus on the value for money secured by public bodies.
In this week's blog, Senior Researcher @patrickking.bsky.social argues that a focus on departmental efficiency targets can distract from *where* most day-to-day spending is distributed, and value for money won/lost - through public bodies.

I have writers' block, so instead I worked out how long the HBO Harry Potter series would run if it had as lengthy a production as modern HBO shows.

At 'True Detective' pace it would take ten years to get to 'Goblet of Fire'
At House of the Dragon pace it would take eight years.

Lots of coverage today of the NHS England CEO stepping down

This is a good thing *if* it's the starting gun on dismantling the model

That is *not* a comment on Amanda Pritchard, but the mistake of creating NHS England, which has ballooned in size & remit, & is now a barrier to reform

Many thanks to @heather-themj.bsky.social for publishing this (and for a great headline!).

"Some strategic authorities will simply be the wrong size. Too small to function as real regional entities, they are unlikely to bear the weight of genuine decentralisation."

It sets out the case for very large 'provinces' for parts of England, with directly elected Governors.

It's also a think-piece about the fundamental differences from place to place in England.

The focus of devolution is currently absorbed by the new strategic authorities and consolidation of local authorities. While this is undoubtedly important, there is a huge gap growing at the community level.

We'll also have to make informed bets, which play to the UK's strengths.

It's been a privilege to chair roundtables with leading sector experts & officials exploring future UK strategy.

Some thoughts👇
The new Government is committed to the UK being a "life sciences superpower".

We've hosted roundtables with leading officials from
the HRA, UKRI & Office for Life Sciences to ask what this means, and how to get there.

In which one playground shuts and another is sealed off from the public before it even opens, in a chilling warning for the future of local government.
