Whatever you think of that as a statement, the increasing abandonment of that pride – and the embracing of the slop aesthetic by some of the world’s largest corporations this Christmas – is a worrying trend. Birds of Amsterdam is perched precariously on the borderline – a music video that almost takes an appropriately light touch too far, when it comes to complementing the majestic score that it accompanies. Marcos Souza’s piano composition is rightly centre-stage in director Bruno Sãnto’s project. It is a piece to be swept away by, and would probably instinctively trigger a large portion of the audience to close their eyes, and simply imagine their own visualisations for this playfully swooping score.

It is something I find very difficult to explain, because watching comedy hinging on social embarrassment is a highly unpleasant process – to the extent if I am watching live, I may need to wince and look away, or if I am watching something retrospectively, I will reflexively pause when things get too much.
