There are many persuasive and powerful reasons to define witchcraft in terms of practice or the secular, but because we’re willing to let white Christians define what religion looks like isn’t one of them.

“Religion” is as much a product of colonialism as anything else. It’s about where power lives and who gets to count. And the popular definitions that we rely on are white, European, and Christian.
