So in April I'm returning to China with a friend. Two destinations are set: Shanghai, because she wants to see it, Hangzhou because me + Xiling society = happiness. Recommend us museums, historical sights, both ancient and China's modern/socialist period, curiosities to visit etc.

Got these absolutely beautiful Qingtian 青田 seal stones! Already have a project for most of these, can't wait to start carving them. Zhou Lianggong noted of his brother that he loved seal stones so much, whenever he got any, he held them in his palms and looked at them into the night. Can understand.

side inscription: 吾無知也 "I am the one lacking knowledge"

Initially wanted this to be my 藏書印, but the many possible meanings of 書 made me realize this is a multipurpose seal. I love how abstract and art deco it is.

Been editing a volume of essays on Chinese thought for our department's quarterly publication. It was and to an extent still is a bumpy fucking ride, three people danced back on publishing with us, but so far we have about 75 pages. Dare I say we are so back? I'm enthusiastic about it again.

So I post a lot about seal carving stuff, but would anyone be interested in the seals that I carve through my studies? Like this one saying 吾心在太古 "my heart-mind in remote antiquity" in seal script.

The second concept is 印外求印 by which he meant that he often had to carve his seals on non-jade materials like ceramics, bricks, clay pieces etc. due to being poor. So things outside of the realm of seal carving saved, upheld his seal carving. Ceramic seal by Yan Shougu 燕守谷:

So the first concept is 印从书出 by which he meant the biggest influence on his seal carving style were the stone drum inscriptions 石鼓文, but he learned those from books, not from willy-nilly or didn't come up with them himself. Stone drum inscriptions:

Nightly reading about Wu Changshuo and learned of two interesting concepts he employed. Seal for attention, also seals like this is why Wu is still the GOAT of seal carving. Read on below.

Ordered a set of these gorgeous Qingtian stones, each will be dedicated to a carver that influenced me, in no particular order: Wu Changshuo, Zhao Zhiqian, Huang Mufu, Deng Shiru and Chen Guobin. A sixth different stone will be dedicated to Zhou Lianggong. My switch Deng Shiru out with Qi Baishi.

Nearing my 13th playthrough of SOMA over the years, that timeless masterpiece by @frictionalgames.bsky.social Over the years and repetitions it never lost even one ounce of its depth. Seal depicts a stylized Construct waving to Simon with scan lines distorting Simon's vision. Side inscription: 感谢.

I swear, the《賴古堂印譜》from 1667 has some of the most dramatic seals I ever saw. This one says "first among the sorrowful men all under heaven". Beautiful seal tho.

Ever since I first saw seals carved by Chen Guobin 陈国斌, I have been obsessed. How tf does he achieve this effect? And the way how deliberate his carving is, like this seal: it's off center both as a whole and as single characters, yet the full effect is still harmonious.

From the《賴古堂印譜》1667, based on the biography of Tao Hongjing in the Biographies of hermits chapter of The history of the Southern Dynasties by Li Yanshou: "[he read books by the ten thousands] and if he ever found anything he didn't know, a deep sense of shame overcame him". 😎

Hungarian artist Imre Baász (1941-1991) in 1977 illustrated Hungarian poet Endre Ady's (1877-1919) poem titled "Two kurucz [soldiers] talking". For the occasion he carved a seal, but it was created with the same aqua forte technique as the illustration itself. Beautiful!

Almost midnight here and was planning to go to sleep, but discovered the calligraphy of Southern Song painter Chen Rong 陳容 (c. 1200–1266) and oh my...love at first sight! His writing seems so modern, it's gorgeous! Need more, much-much more!

Also learned that the method by which the more complex a character or seal was, the thinner it was carved for obvious reasons and the thicker the simpler it was, had a name: 寬可走馬,密不容針 "the horse may thread where it is wide, a needle cannot penetrate where it is thin".
