as always, i focus primarily on older, obscure, and just plain weird games, as big name titles don't need the help.
so, onwards!
1. Carimara
Play as a little goblin creature summoned by a witch to investigate what's haunting her cottage, it's a creepy bite-size mystery akin to the Frog Detective games, and has gorgeous visuals.

Extremely creepy little horror puzzle game where the idea is you control the player character's hand to interact with the environment and solve puzzles, and once you get used to the weird control scheme, it's utterly fascinating. Very neat game that flew under the radar.

The rather generic sounding name doesn't key you in on what an absolute blast this game is, it's basically "What if Metal Slug/Contra, but Metroidvania?!" and has some phenomenal pixelart, but my goodness the music is really great. Give it a go, it's immensely fun!

Beautiful and surreal and extremely queer Survival Horror game that has some truly wondrous worldbuilding, some great puzzle mechanics, and excellent characters, I loved this one and hope you will too!

The dev game me a copy, and I got so god damn sucked into it, played a few playthroughs now, and it's incredibly satisfying. Blast asteroids to mine gems and pay off your crippling space debt. And lotta fun things you can do with the games physics systems.

Absurd vehicular combat that's very Mad Max coded, unlock and upgrade your battle wagons with new weapons and loadouts, and go die historic on the fury road!

My game of the year for 2024, it's just utterly brilliant, a genius game. Part dungeon crawler, part cursed typing tutor, like Mavis Beacon teaches necromancer. Play it and the Cryptmaster is gonna delight you with every wry, sardonic fully voiced line.

This is another game I really must revisit, because from what I played it was a super neat isometric Survival Horror game based on I believe a hugely popular Brazilian TTRPG, and there's a very good dog in it who you can pet to restore sanity.

Short but brilliant little 3D platformer, the movement mechanics are fantastic, it gets surprisingly challenging, and the music is real good. Definitely worth picking up if you'd like a nice bite-size platformer that's fun even just to move around in.

You play as a pig farmer who doesn't want to work for the mob any more. It's a short game, you can easily finish it in an evening, but it's incredibly tightly paced and I've compared it before to a Coen Brothers movie.

I have been thoroughly enamoured with this game, there's been some great oldschool games with turn based combat this year already, but my god is this a gem. Wonderful characters, a very neat story, world building that really commits to the garbage bit, please play it!

Drunken knight Pavol bumbles into an absolutely wild conspiracy in what I can only describe as Monty Python's Berserk, it's a great little RPGMaker gem filled with amazing characters, the humour is just wonderful, and the music is... Oh you gotta hear it!

It's like a playable 90s anime OVA sizzle reel. FPS roguelike where you've got seconds to live, and need to move fast and kill faster to add more seconds to your life, it's pure absurd nonsense, and it's stylish as hell.

You want another wonderful turn based RPG? One with great music, a gorgeous art style, fun characters and humour, and has a well paced story that puts an amazing spin on an old JRPG trope because you play a small mouse who sets out to kill a god.

Backed this one on Kickstarter ages ago because it looked neat, got my backer key earlier this year, and guess what? It is neat! Very chill Match-3 game, which has some excellent music to vibe to. There's a short story campaign to it too.

A game I think seriously deserved to be played by way, way more people, I'd describe it sorta like a Survival Horror game that is *JUST* the puzzles. And they are some absolute doozies! Super unique feeling atmosphere to it too.

It's super underappreciated, a first-person metroidvania where you play as a little frog guy with a gun, and the sheer amount of bosses is unreal! And the variety between the bosses, all so very inventive and varied in their attacks and mechanics. Phenomenal game, please play it!
