Testing ecophysiological theory using tree traits along a vapour pressure deficit (VPD) gradient shows, as predicted, that photosynthetic capacity is higher at higher VPD sites. Contrary to the predictions, potential water conductivity tends to increase with higher VPD. doi.org/10.1038/s420...

This graphical abstract reveals how different strategies, like thicker bark, bud protection, and water use efficiency help species survive (or not) in fire-affected areas. The study findings show that fire not only selects the most resilient trees but also reshapes the entire community structure over time.

Active forest fires in BC, AB and ON today. GOES-West mid-ir showing active and extremely active fires (white and red respectively) in BC and AB. Another active day tomorrow for BC & AB and area burned in Canada will likely hit 3 million ha soon. Only 2023 had more area burned at this time of year.

Hyperdominance in the world's most diverse savanna. The Cerrado has more than 1,600 tree species, and yet just 30 make up half of all trees.

We synthesize recent research on fire use and biodiversity, and provide a decision-making framework for biodiversity conservation under novel fire regimes.

We recommend that fire management strategies for preserving biodiversity should consider both social and ecological factors, iterative learning informed by effective monitoring, and developing and testing new management actions. An integrated approach to learning about fire and biodiversity will help to navigate the complexities of novel fire regimes and preserve biodiversity in a rapidly changing world.
