"'Ugh. Why are you so cheerful?'
'It's a passage spell.'
'A passage spell? I've never heard of that.' His tone blended skepticism & curiosity. 'The grumpier you are, the more cheerful I become. It passes your grumpy energy across to me & I transform it into bright flowers & sunny days." Kate Elliot

Your chance, at last, to preorder the book that reignited my love of writing during a rough period when I wondered if I should just quit.

THE WITCH ROADS available for preorder. Publication date is June 10, 2025

Book cover. TItle: The Witch Roads. Author: Kate Elliott. Over a light purplish and blue background, a trio of towers looms. In the foreground, two rows of animal-headed human-bodied statues create a path. Two small figures stand, on the path, in a patch of golden sunlight. The two farthest statues look human, although whether they are is in question.

Coffee with.... grapefruit? Turns out, it's tangy and refreshing. Cheers to trying something odd that turns out to be pleasant.

faded memories
along the rocky coast
playing in tide pools
anemones waving
hermit crab walking
sea star bright & slow
gulls crying above
waves crashing against long stone benches reaching from the cliffs
where footprints worn by ancient ancestors
greeted my toes like old friends
photo of the big flat stone "benches" along the west coast, worn with millions of feet and waves, pocked with tide pools. The ocean and coast cliffs are in the background.

I love that character.

Lem can be heavy-handed at times but THE FUTUROLOGICAL CONGRESS hits just the right tone, IMO.

Ijon Tichy may be Stanislaw Lem's greatest creation–a funny, bumbling, imperfect protagonist who refuses to surrender his optimism in the face of absurdity or despair. Here's where to start with his stories...

I just listened to this great interview. I didn't get a chance to meet @foxesandroses.bsky.social in Seattle and so it was great to hear her here. I'll have to see if I can view any of her panels from the Seattle Worldcon when I get the time.

Here's the message of the day.
iridescentwords.bsky.social
Perhaps you could use a support sandwich...
adamcsharp.bsky.social
In Swedish, a word for what you eat to bridge the gap between meals (or while waiting for the main course to cook) is stödmacka. It means "support sandwich."

A similar word in Norwegian is ventepølse, or "waiting sausage."
iridescentwords.bsky.social
‎"It is the story of a very stubborn woman and I didn't see it when I created her... that really makes her powerful. If I wrote Blackbird now it would be a totally different thing. I understand her better and better and I would love to be as stubborn as she is." Tamta Melashvili

‎"I allowed myself. to play out some scenarios in a much more dramatic way than in my life." - Megan Nolan
iridescentwords.bsky.social
‎"I didn't give a name to the male hero and I did it on purpose. I wanted to generalise a specific kind of man... He's a good man, he can express his feelings... I really enjoyed writing about this better kind of man and sometimes you can meet him in this life..." Tamta Melashvili
