Nice to see this being floated, based on Andrew Newby's excellent research into his identity. I wrote about the Finn and Swede in the GPO back in 2013 here: www.thejournal.ie/readme/ordic... It led to a nice interview with YLE in a rainy Dublin back in 2016!

That's it. It is one of the pensions I have been working on relating to pensioners living in Ireland.

As Tom says Hugh she came back to Ireland after her husband died in NOLA with her children, first to Borrisoleigh and then moving about a bit before settling in Thurles. She was a Dwyer and met her husband in Louisiana after the war.

What must be one of the most unusual names for an Irish #WW1 veteran. Hilmar Bielitz of Thurles, Tipperary. Named for his Leipzig-born grandfather, a Civil War U.S. Navy veteran who his grandmother married in New Orleans. Hilmar was gassed in 1918 during the Second Battle of The Marne, but survived.

Thanks Nicholas. I'm using the Nez Perce War at the moment as a vehicle to look a bit deeper at the enlisted Irish role in what happened to Native Americans. Incredibly three pensions were being paid out in Ireland for men who fought and died in combat with them in 1877.

Really glad you enjoyed it Sue!

Finally made it to the final resting place of Harry Järv at Kappelsbacken, Korsholm. His account of his wartime experiences formed the basis of the film Framom främsta linjen. He also captured an incredible photographic record of the conflict with the camera he carried, often taking it into action.

Out and about in Milwaukee's Third Ward, where the city's Irish were concentrated in the 19th century. Historic plaques to mark the sinking of the Lady Elgin which saw large numbers of Irish lose their lives, and the 1892 Fire which left large numbers of Irish homeless.

Very sad to hear of the death of the wonderful Bríd McGrath she was an expert on the history of early modern Ireland, especially the histories of parliaments, elections and towns. Thoughtful, fierce, funny, a lover of nature and Connemara: she will be sorely missed. rip.ie/death-notice...
