Guy Pe’er, conservation biologist: “If we allow these small-scale losses to continuously happen, we risk driving the system to a complete collapse. We are literally risking our health and security.” The research shows the grave impacts of cumulative small-scale losses.

'Cementing over our own future': Europe's nature loss is 600 football pitches daily
Every year, Europe loses 1,500km² to construction. Green spaces that once sheltered wildlife, supplied food and removed carbon from the atmosphere at an alarming rate, a new investigation reveals.

So that's it then. The biggest fish kill in the history of the State, and we're just going to move on, with no idea who or what caused it?

It would be better to label it a river kill.

Some major polluter is today breathing a sign of relief, while the river Blackwater remains half dead.

Fishermen have noted a decrease in fish. Ecologist @whittledaway.bsky.social
highlights the 'spill-over effect' of MPAs that benefits fishermen as well as biodiversity. In other parts of the world, stopping/reducing fishing in particular areas is proven to increase fish population outside the MPA.

There's plenty of blame to go around, incl. the failing EPA licensing system which failed to prevent the repeated pollution events which would undoubtedly have weakened the resilience of any wildlife in the river, making them more vulnerable to whatever pollutant ultimately caused the huge fish kill.

River Blackwater: "This kill will reverberate out through the system, to the birds, bats, otters & other animals which fed on fish and insects from the river, having a much greater impact than thousands of dead fish"

Extremely disappointing news on the Blackwater fish kill.

"It just goes to show the state bodies that are supposed to protect our fish don’t appear to be able to do so because if they can’t find the cause, how can they guarantee there won’t be a repeat?"

83% believe that the impact of fishing boats on ocean habitats & amount of unwanted fish caught should be prioritized when
distributing fishing quotas. 65% believe that the amount of jobs the boat creates & the importance of the fishing activity for
the coastal community should also be a priority.
irishwildlifetrust.bsky.social
Citizens support such a re-distribution of quotas because it would support local seafood, protect jobs and protect the ocean.

France predominantly allocates fishing opportunities to its fleet based on past catch history, largely disregarding social & environmental criteria.

This is something also seen in Ireland with small scale vessels not recieving a fair share @iimro.bsky.social
