Dyslexia isn’t just about difficulties with reading or writing, it’s also about unique strengths in creativity, communication, and problem-solving. Understanding both sides helps us create environments where dyslexic learners can truly thrive. #DyslexiaAwareness
Dyslexia can be - Enhanced problem solving skills. Difficulties around reading & writing. Big picture thinking. Difficulties around maths & reading maths language. Strong narrative reasoning. Difficulty interpreting body language. Good at identifying patterns. Difficulty processing a string of instructions. Talented in oral communication. Organisation difficulties. Creative.

So much more than online learning, The Haven is a space where learning adapts, strengths shine, and every young person belongs. Read more about our approach on our blog - https://bit.ly/HavenApproach
The Haven is more than just a school, it’s a carefully crafted environment where. Learning is tailored - Education is adapted to meet individual needs and preferences.
Strengths are nurtured - Talents and abilities are identified
and fostered.
Community is built - Learners connect with peers who understand and support them.
Wellbeing is prioritised - Emotional and mental health are valued alongside academic success. Individuality is celebrated - Learners are encouraged to be their authentic selves.

Strategies for reading in secondary.
Reading for enjoyment.
Need to keep motivation for decoding, think of games as well as morphology.
And for those with language needs, focus on language such as narrative and vocabulary.

And have those involved in decision-making or teaching in the new setting learnt from #autistic and other #neurodivergent authored theory and #EdRes?

The new Autistic SPACE framework looks fab, fast & practical for auditing & addressing issues ✨

Fab YouTube shorts exist. It takes time & effort to track the good ones down & use them in lessons.

💯. I kind of suspect that a big part of the problem is (sigh) capitalism. Obvs the ed publishers want ££. Schools can buy expensive licenses for these resources. Textbooks are cheaper.

Alternatively, we can learn from ND adults re school:

“We lament the loss of creative & intellectual potentialities offered by our divergences that we could have harnessed had we been encouraged to embrace them” (Betts et al. 2023)

Eg pacing while dictating (to scribe or computer).
isabellefk.bsky.social
Imv really important not to continue to tie teens up in the mechanics of writing, eg handwriting, when there are other means of communicating ideas, eg typing, dictation. Important to identify & hack other barriers to engagement in writing - eg some students will need to move while ‘writing’.

Concerning that opportunities are limited by lack of communication/info, eg between schools & unis, staff & families.

So important for children & teens to be listened to. They are experts by experience.
