Everyone gets a bit stuck on words some of the time, but for people with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) this happens a lot more frequently.
But we at RADLD think that people with DLD have lots to say, & so we are working to amplify their voices.
#DLDday is Friday October 17th.

Wow!
'People with Developmental Language Disorder may not be believed as much as other people' within the Justice system.
This is why we need way more awareness of DLD.

🧩Learning to talk & read isn’t just about effort or teaching—it’s shaped by biology, experience & context

🧠Our new review links genetics, neuroscience, psychology & education to show why some children find language or reading easier.

And a hidden contributory factor is unrecognised language needs. When needs are unidentified and unsupported, there is a huge toll on mental wellbeing. And DLD is common, with on average 2 in a class of 30. m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko6s...

RADLD have a really handy calculator on their website which helps yo to work out how many children in a school or people in a town are likely to have DLD. It's an eye opener.
Developmental Language Disorder is common.

Even before a person’s DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) is diagnosed they usually know they are different. So rather than stand out, it’s natural to get by, by masking. Quietly nodding or creating a distraction are strategies to go unnoticed. #DLDday #DevLangDis @radld.bsky.social

When thinking about DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) it’s easier to focus on the spoken part & forget that it also involves understanding. DLD makes understanding words and sentences hard too. Shorter sentences, simple vocabulary & pausing more all help! #DLDday #DevLangDis @radld.bsky.social

Reading is based on language.
Language predicts letter knowledge and phonological awareness which in turn predict decoding skills. Language is the foundation of phonics.
Language also impacts directly on reading comprehension.

One year later oral language group died the biggest effect.
Focus on oral language to improve reading!
